Victoria Memorial: The sparkling white building tops the list of historical significance and visual delight. Built in the memory of the British queen in 1906, it is designed in the Indo-saracenic revivalist style by merging British and Mughal elements with the Venetian, Egyptian, Deccan and Islamic architectural influences.

Indian Museum: Largest and oldest museum in India, was designed by Walter Granville in close resemblance to the British Museum in London. The Italianate structure has a colonnaded courtyard with enormous halls inside. Colloquially called the jadughar, it houses sixty galleries that serve as links to the history of mankind.

Writers' Building: Designed by Thomas Lyon in 1777, was the first building to be constructed in this city. It served as the Chief Minister's Office along with the Council of Ministers' chambers till 2013. The building has a Greco-Roman look with colourful Minton floor tiles and Corinthian columns.

Marble Palace: Driven by his passion for collecting works of art, a rich Bengali business man Raja Rajendra Mullick built the beautiful Marble Palace in 1835 in neoclassical style. This three-storeyed building comprises tall Corinthian pillars and traditional Bengali open courtyards. It is known to house innumerable sculptures and furniture, clocks and a zoo – the first of its kind in India.

Shahid Minar: To commemorate his successful defence of Delhi against the Marathas in 1804 and also the victory of the East India Company's armed forces over the Gurkhas in the Anglo-Nepalese war, Major General Sir David Ochterlony erected the Shahid Minar in 1828. It has been renamed thus in the post-independence era.

The Armenian Holy Church of Nazareth: It is an 18th century Armenian Apostolic church in Kolkata serving as the centre of the Armenian community and the seat of the Armenian Vicarate of India and the Far East. Adorned with frescoes and paintings, the church has a cross, the Gospel text and twelve candle sticks symbolising Christ's twelve apostles.

Dakhshineshwar Temple: It is a Hindu temple located near Kolkata and built on the banks of the river Hooghly. The presiding deity of the temple is Bhavatarini, the goddess Kali. The compound, apart from the nine spired main temple, contains a large courtyard surrounding the temple with rooms along its boundary.

St Paul's Cathedral: An Anglican cathedral noted for its Gothic architecture. It is the seat of the Diocese of Kolkata. It was also the first cathedral built in the overseas territory of the British Empire. It was created by the pre-Raphaelite master Sir Edward Burne-Jones.

The Nakhoda Masjid: Principal mosque of Kolkata, in the Burrabazaar business district of central Kolkata. Its prayer hall has a capacity of 10,000. It has three domes and two minarets which are 151 feet high. The gateway is an ersatz of the Buland Darwaza at Fatehpur Sikri.

Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee: He won the 2019 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences with Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer "for their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty"

Sir Ronald Ross: He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1902 for his discovery of the life cycle of malarial parasite.

C V Raman: He carried out ground-breaking work in the field of light scattering and earned the Nobel in 1930 in Physics for Raman Effect.

Dr Amartya Sen: He received the Nobel in 1998 in Economic Sciences for his contributions to Welfare Economics and Social Choice Theory.

Rabindra Nath Tagore: He was the first Asian to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 for Gitanjali.

Saint Teresa: She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her charitable work.
